Askvoll is the perfect destination for anglers and fishing enthusiasts. You have plenty of options here with fishing in the sea and lakes.
Out in the open sea and fjords, the conditions are perfect for sea fishing all year round. You can fish for mackerel, saithe, cod, haddock and ling in the sea waters. Please note that foreign tourists are only permitted to use handheld gear. If you use deep-water tackle, you can even catch halibut and catfish! Fishing in the winter is a unique experience and this is the season for the big catches.
Fishing has always been an important part of life for the coastal communities in Norway. Askvoll still has islands where fishing is a vital source of income for the inhabitants. These islands have boat houses and fisherman's shacks that are perfect for fishing holidays. They are located right on the water’s edge and often have suitable boats available along with everything you need to prepare and store your catches. You could also join a local fisherman on a guided fishing trip, getting great advice about the best spots for fishing. Several of the guesthouses in the area provide guided fishing trips on request.
Safety at sea
Out on the coast, the weather can change rapidly. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, and remember to pack warm clothes and all the necessary safety gear before you go fishing. Please note that Norwegian law requires the use of floating/life vests onboard a moving pleasure craft under 8 m of length.
Askvoll has numerous lakes in the hills, many with fish. Most of these are open for fishing, without the need for a permit. Among the best lakes are Herlandsvatnet, Fismavatnet, Askvatnet, Eidsvatnet, Nyksvatnet, Langevatnet and Øyravatnet.
You can also catch delicious sea trout from the bridge in Straumen. Please note that if you plan to fish for salmon, sea trout or arctic char, you have to pay a fishing fee to the Norwegian State.
